Christmas Update! + Handicamp Volunteers needed

Hello all,

Thanks to Lauren for keeping you up to date on goings-on in the last couple
of weeks. I disappeared from my duties for a couple of reasons -- an
excellent three-day course sponsored by Rio Tinto Shared Business Services
and extra shifts at work, I hope you've all done your Christmas shopping
because the shopping centres are chaos!

Anyway...

Compliments of the season to all our members and friends of the Rotaract
Club of UWA and best wishes for the new year 2006.

And onto business...

We'll need to have a meeting in early January for those of you who are
around in Perth. This will either be a weekend (Sunday afternoon, typically
Matilda Bay Foreshore and informal) or an evening meeting. E-mail me your
preferences and availability.

Business for that meeting will be planning for the start to 2006, including
Orientation Day (O-Day) plans -- we have received paperwork from the Guild
for this due 23 January, so we have a deadline to meet.

Additionally we have a request for assistance from Handicamp:

"Handicamp is desperately in need of buddies (carers). We need about 10 to
be able to match up with the number of people with disabilities we have
accepted (we also have a waiting list of 10 people with disabilities).

A brief overview:

January 22nd to 28th at Pt Walter Recreation Camp Bicton
18 to 35 years of age
All costs met by Rotary
No previous carer experience required
Must get a Volunteer Police Clearance

Please do not hesitate to contact me should you have any queries, or require
any additional information."

Basically Handicamp is a week-long leadership camp for people with
disabilities -- lots of activities. I will put you in contact if you are
able to help out.

CanTeen Bandanna Day Part 1

Hi all,

Yesterday we started selling bandannas for CanTeen early because we expect the uni to be, shall I say, 'distracted' come Friday. They sold very well, especially this year's new designs.

We'll be doing it all again on Friday between 12pm and 2pm, so come and find us somewhere near the Oak Lawn.

Bulletin -- It's the last week!

YES! It's the last week of Semester 2. If you're not as happy about that as
me, then you probably have too many exams coming up.

But first:
* Our Canteen Bandanna sales are on this week on Tuesday and Friday roughly
between 12pm and 2pm. Meet us around the Oak Lawn (near the Social Sciences
courtyard) and help us make some money for CanTeen (teenage cancer charity).
Bandannas in a variety of designs sell for $3 each.

* Are you interested in making a table and going to Bingo at Subiaco
Rotaract's Inaugural Bingo Bonanza on 26 November 2005? If so let me know,
the details are on the blog: http://uwarotaract.blogspot.com

* Speaking of holidays, if you're finishing uni or disappearing over summer
and/or have anything you need to hand over (eg, committee directors), please
let me know.

* Also, we will have some regular meetings over summer (there's still work
to be done), however the first will be a dinner, and we'll wait until after
the exams for that. The details were in last week's minutes on the blog:
http://uwarotaract.blogspot.com

Okay, back to whatever you were doing.

Thanks

Thanks to everyone for making the international dinner a great night last night!

Thanks Julie for turning up early and helping me set up, Kylie for organising the warmer and to everyone for bringing food.

We got a donation of $50 to put towards the Pakistan Relief fund, so the night had a bit of a fundraiser element too.

Unfortunately I won't be around for any more UWA Rotaract meetings now as I finish uni this year, won't be here for the dinner after exams and I have to miss the bandana selling unfortunately now too (lunch with the High Court). I might see some of you at the chocolate appreciation evening though, and I'm sure I'll see you around after I join Subi Rotaract. For anyone else finishing uni this year and interested in joining Subi, I'm sure Cynthia would love to hear from you too.

Just one question in relation to the money I spent for last night - do I give you the receipts Jess to get reimbursed?

Thanks again.

INTERNATIONAL DINNER UPDATE- and who is the phantom venue holder?

VENUE

Offer of a new venue is great and we can all set up no problem.

One question who is it that is offering the house? There was no name on the comment.

OTHER INVITATIONS

Also I have invited the South Perth and Darling Ranges Presidents and any interested club members

DINNER SCALE

I think it is best due to time constrictions to make the dinner a rotaract based event. If anyone would like to bring a friend or two certainly do, just let us know by tuesday so we have numbers and can ensure enough food.

Regarding Rotarian i will send an email just inviting  the Nedlands and West Perth Presidents and Youth Directors.

NUMBERS

DON"T stress venue awsome phantom holder so far  the numbers only look to be 20.

International Dinner heating food?

Hi guys

We were talking about the international dinner at the meeting on Tuesday - UWA can't lend us any heating appliances, but they suggested we contact Hendies Party Hire in Claremont. They have a hot box for $95, which would fit all the dishes, or Chaffing dishes, which fit 2 or 3 dishes for $30.

Alternatively we could get a Bain Marie which are different sizes - an 8 pot dry bain marie is $60. I think this is probably what we're wanting - it's a bit like a buffet food warmer. I will phone them tomorrow and ask about delivery of equipment etc, and whether they can give us a discount (eg free delivery etc) as we are a non-profit organisation.

If anyone has any suggestions, let me know!

Cheers

Week 7 Minutes (late, oops!)

Hi guys!

Really sorry i just realised that the Meeting Minutes for Week 7 had not been sent through to the web page. So here it is (extremely late however) in case some of you would like to catch up on what had been discussed!

Attendance: Lauren Basanovic, Kylie Kerin, Sara Adhitya, Sarah Zhang, Carly White, Tara, Joshua King, Dominik, Robin and Julie

Guests: Victoria, Annie and Annie from CANTEEN

* The visit to the Wheelchair Factory was a huge success! UWA Rotoract donated $200 to the cause, which should go directly into producing 2-3 wheelchairs! Lauren shared her photos with us and we are planning to return on Saturday the 8th of October to actually assist in building a couple of wheelchairs!

* Kylie has contacted South Perth Rotoract about getting a team together to help out at the 2005 TELETHON in the phone room. She has expressed that it is heaps of fun and includes meeting celebrities and the telethon children and an invitation to the channel 7 after party!

* One representative from UWA Rotoract will be welcome at the West Perth Rotoract meetings. This includes a delicious breakfast and the chance to learn more about their club and what they do.

* Tara and Carly attended the last Dial a Santa meeting. It was discussed that we should think about which charities we would like it to be in aid of. They should be medically related to children. We should also think about how we are going to go about with the advertising. Please post any suggestions.

* The girls from Canteen shared with us a bit about the organisation. They brought along samples of the bandannas we will be selling Tues lunchtime 28th October. $10 for Designer bandannas and $3 for the normal ones! It will both raise public awareness and money for Canteen Programs.

Meeting Minutes Week 9

Attendance: Lucy, Josh, Kylie, Lauren and Sarah

Apologies: Jess and Heather

* 8th October Building Wheelchairs for Kids at the Wheelchair factory!

* Josh attended a membership meeting recently at the Dome Subiaco. Present were representatives from Subi, Darlington and South Perth Rotary. Much was discussed concerning how to boost membership numbers. Some ideas included more contact with highschools and interact clubs in order to introduce them to Rotaract.

* Lucy is organising a social and networking event - a international food night! So far a tentative booking has been made for the 20th of October. Everyone will be required to bring a plate of food from a country of choice. A raffle may be organised to raise money so if anyone knows of any local businesses that may be interested in making  a donation please let us know! If everyone could think about decorations and music! Please come to our next meeting so we can discuss further!

* As for the Bandanna selling for Canteen, the next step is getting to posters stamped and getting a PA system set up. Remember be ready to sell bandannas on the 25th October.

* Next meeting 4th October. May Tannock. 1st week back from the break!

Hi peeps!

West Perth Rotary Meetings

6th October - Kylie Kerin

Telethon - i have been advised that all the phone rooms are now full and that we really needed to nominate by about july to get in, so there's definitely some food for thought for next year. However, i'm sure we can all do our bit, and maybe make a small donation to Telethon.

Blogging for promotion and communication

Welcome to members of other clubs who may be visiting! Our Blog experiment is nearly three months old and is getting quite successful. I believe this is a good model for other clubs to consider following because it's dynamic, automatic and easy to update.
Drop me a line if you want more info, or if you set one up I'll link to it here. The address is uwarotaract@hotmail.com.
Did I mention that it's free?

Membership 'summit'

Members of all four Rotaract clubs in Western Australia met today to discuss membership and marketing issues to enable further growth of all clubs. It was a great turnout.
Much was discussed, including the growing importance of the web versus traditional media, cooperation to attract members by way of Joint Interest Nights, and having a single marketing image. We discussed using newspapers, events, radio and the Rotaract.org.au websites for publicity.
It was also a chance to update each other on the goings-on of each club, more on those later.
Thanks to Hassan for organising and taking minutes.

Telethon 2005

To all Rotaractors in Western Australia!

Ever wanted to do something good for the community? Ever had a secret desire to work in a call centre? Ever thought you'd look kinda cute wearing one of those headsets whilst talking on the phone and typing on a computer? Ever wanted to be on TV?

If the answer to any of these questions is yes, then we want you! Telethon 2005 is calling for volunteers to help out in the call centre for the Telethon Weekend, answering calls from the public and taking their donations. Rotaract has been involved in this in the past, and from all reports has had a fantastic time. As a volunteer you will have access to the Telethon broadcasting area, freebies to sit in the audience and you may be able to schmooze with some of the celebs and other volunteers at the Telethon After Party at the end of the big event!

I will be sending in a group registration for Rotaract, so please phone, email or comment to this blog and let me know if you are interested. I don't know how many of us they will need, so i'll be taking names in order of who responds to me first!

Keep smiling

This week's bulletin!

Hi all,

There will be a meeting this week on Tuesday at 1pm, upstairs from the Ref.
Either in the Café Acorn or one of the rooms next door (we'll use the rooms
if they're free). Look out for us and we'll see you there!

There should be a lot to discuss, because a lot has gone on in the last
couple of weeks. I attended bingo with some members of Subiaco Rotaract, we
had the visit to the wheelchair factory on Saturday (how did that go?) and
meetings have started for Dial-A-Santa. And we can't forget karaoke (okay I
guess we can if no-one went?).

If you attended any of these events (or ones I don't know about) post a
report of it to our blog! If you don't know how yet send me an e-mail
uwarotaract@hotmail.com or post a comment on the blog itself.

Be sure to visit our blog frequently -- I'm sticking with the new address so
bookmark http://uwarotaract.blogspot.com

Also Kylie has posted (thanks Kylie!) that West Perth Rotary are happy to
have us for breakfast at any time. I think the best method to say you'll be
going (Thursday mornings, 1 Rotaractor a week, free!) is to leave a comment
under Kylie's entry on the blog at:
http://uwarotaract.blogspot.com/2005/08/sign-up-for-west-perth-rotary-meetin

You are served with a delicious breakfast, and it is your time to get to know one of our co-sponsoring clubs better, and meet, chat and laugh with the members of West Perth that make some important and inspirational things happen in the community.

All you need to do is choose the date or dates that suit you - you can go along as many times as you like - they love getting to know us as well - and just comment back to me, so i can work out the best times for everyone involved without getting clashes every week!

When: every Thursday morning, 7 for 7:30 start (about 7:15 is fine) It should finish by 8:30am

Where: the beautiful Tawarri Reception Centre (Esplanade Street, Dalkeith...drive down Broadway towards Steve's Hotel, go through the roundabout next to Steve's and turn right onto Esplanade Street once you've driven past the hotel. Keep going aaaall the way down that road until you get to Tawarri).

So here's a list of the dates of Thursdays, check your diaries, and give me up to 3 dates you'd like to go. You don't have to go along, but it's a lot of fun, and helps to make more meaning for Rotaractors and Rotarians alike when we can share our experiences (plus you get a really good free breakfast :))

Thursday 1st September
Thursday 8th September
Thursday 15th September
Thursday 22nd September
Thursday 29th September
Thursday 6th October
Thursday 13th October
Thursday 20th October
Thursday 27th October
Thursday 3rd November
Thursday 10th November
Thursday 17th November

Exams start on Saturday 5th November and finish Saturday 19th November, but that shouldn't interfere too much - it's just an hour at breakfast time!

Cheers guys!

* Daffodil Day is this Friday, 19th August! The Cancer Council have asked
for a helping hand in the selling of Daffodil Day merchandise to raise money

provide food for the event in November.

Subiaco-UWA dinner

Last night we had the Subiaco and UWA dinner at the Sicilian Restaurant in Subiaco. A pretty excellent turnout from both clubs as the photo we took (sorry about the quality, looks better on the phone screen) will attest.

A nice night for all (I was there so I can make this judgement in good conscience!) was had, and it was good to see both old and new faces from both clubs.

South Perth and Dial-A-Santa Meeting

This will go in next week's bulletin but for the blog readers, two messages
via Richard at South Perth:

---- Dialasanta meeting Sunday 28th August 2pm ----

The next dialasanta meeting will be held on the 28th of August at 2pm. We
will be meeting at Dome in South Perth for take-away coffee and if it's a
nice day, pull up a rug on the South Perth foreshore and hold our meeting
there.

We had a great turnout last meeting and are well and truely underway in
getting this show on the road.

If anyone is interested in coming to the next meeting please do so, many
hands make light work and it would be great to have input from all four
Rotaract clubs.

---- KARAOKE!! ----

Who is up for some Karaoke action?!?!

I have booked a function room at Utopia 109 James Street in Northbridge at
7pm on Friday the 19th.

The room hire is $250 and can accomodate 20 people give or take a few (ie we
are looking at $12.50 a head). You can BYO wine at $2.00 a head for corkage
or buy there.

We can stay for up to 5 hours (until the wee hours of the morning).

Let me know who can make it so I can confirm the booking ASAP. Feel free to
invite any of your friends who may be interested. If we have a lot more than
20 we may need to book a bigger room.

Let the club battles begin!!

Forward your interest to Richard or myself/the blog.

IMPORTANT: Web site change

The temporary (possibly) address for our web site has changed to http://uwarotaract.blogspot.com

While the Guild gets their act together (I guess they're too busy with tomorrow's National Day of Action to notice my e-mails) I've copied our site onto Blog*Spot (thanks Blogger!). I will let you know when we shift back to our normal site.

Note that some features of the blog will be missing on our new site -- some files I've uploaded for example -- and no further files (except for photos) will be uploadable.

Week 3 Bulletin

Hi all,

I don't have much to add to the minutes that I sent out last week so I will
post instead some important reminders.

UPDATE: The web site is not yet fully working (I can't update it, nor can
Blogger), but you can see everything up until last week.

Please remember to RSVP (e-mail preferred) for our events so that we know
how many people to plan for.

Firstly on WEDNESDAY evening 7:30pm we will be having dinner with Subiaco
Rotaractors at the Sicilian Restaurant in Subiaco. We'll be bringing some of
the wine we still possess from the lawn bowls night earlier in the year.

Next, the Wheelchair Factory visit is going ahead on SATURDAY 20th August,
meeting at 10am outside the Guild Tavern at UWA for a car pool to the
factory. Bring friends.

The next meeting is in a week's time, Tuesday 16 August at 1pm, meet at the
Café Acorn (upstairs from the Guild Refectory in the Guild Village).

Week 3 Meeting Minutes

Hi all,

I'm a little bit behind this week and I do apologise in advance for our
website disappearing (edit: this has been posted *after* the web site came
back).

Below is the minutes that I took on Tuesday afternoon.

Joshua King
Membership/Internet Officer
Rotaract Club of UWA

Attendance: Robin Chen, Carly White, Sara Adhitya, Kylie Kerin, Joshua King,
Lucy Shea, Lauren Basanovic, Dominik and Sarah (new).

Apologies: Julie Carruthers, Heather Cooper.

* Wednesday 10 August at 7:30pm -- Dinner with Subiaco Rotaract at the
Sicilian in Subiaco. Please RSVP to laurenbaz@yahoo.com (or the web site).

* MOVED! Saturday 20 August at 10am -- Visit to the Wheelchair Factory with
Olly Pickett, leaving from the UWA Tavern by car pooling. Let us know if
you're coming, you're welcome to bring friends, etc.

* West Perth Rotary is asking for help during their Storm the Stage and
Magic Show events, a representative will be coming to our next meeting.

* Club Service (Kylie): We now have a policy of food (<$10) at meetings.
Requests to Kylie (though her selection was yummy!).

* Lauren has conferred with Jess (Treasurer) and we now have a very healthy
account balance (~$1300) so she proposes that we may have a bigger dinner
later in the year which we will be able to subsidise from these funds.

* Joshua to start planning to set up better induction procedures so we can
start distributing badges and certificates to new members again.

* Subiaco Rotaract tells us they are selling Entertainment Books
(approximately $60 each).

* Kylie proposes some sort of assistance of the Campus Security people in
publicising their services to students. She finds its not as well advertised
or used compared to what she discovered on exchange in Canada.

* Dominik gave an excellent presentation on his usual club -- Rotaract Club
of Cologne (district 1810) -- and the Rotary International Ambassadorial
Scholarship programme. Focused on the 3 way split of events - Learn, Help,
Play. Lots of clubs close together in Germany is also what I noticed.

Next Meeting Tuesday 16 August (2 weeks)
MOVED! Meet at the Café Acorn (we are unable to successfully continuously
book our usual venues). The Café Acorn is located up the stairs above the
Guild Refectory.

Web site's back!

Apologies for anyone who tried to contact us over the past week -- our web
site is stored on the Guild's server and that went down for the whole week.

Anyway, if you're reading this, it's obviously fixed.

Dial a santa meeting Thursday 28th July

Hello all,

The next Dial -A- Santa meeting will be held on Thursday week the 28th of
July at 7.30pm at the Dome Cafe on Mends street next to the Windsor hotel.

The Dial -A- Santa project is a Rotaract project in which santa visits are
arranged with the proceedings going to a children's charity. It is a
longstanding project run by the Rotaract clubs of Western Australia and has
been running continuously in WA since 1981.

You can find an overview of the project at www.dialasanta.com
<http://www.dialasanta.com>

Veronica, Simone and I met last Wednesday to start putting the wheels into
motion. I have put my hand up to coordinate the project as chair but we need
hands on deck to take bookings from the public, publicise the event and send
out press releases to the media including radio and newspapers, seek
volunteers to be santas and helpers and coordinate suit bookings.

We are also looking at beneficiaries for the proceeds of the project this
year. We have recently been in support of the clown doctors.

If anyone would like to help out please come along!! It is a very worthwhile
project but we do need volunteers for it to succeed.

It would be great to see representatives from all rotaract clubs.

Regards,

Richard Taylor

As a Rotaractor, you will work to develop and assist with a variety of community projects, which will assist you in your life skills and in becoming a leader in the community.

We are in District 9450 with the Rotaract Club of Subiaco and our sponsoring clubs are the Rotary Clubs of West Perth and Nedlands.

Return to Semester Bulletin

Hello all!

The semester starts Monday at uni I hope you're all getting ready for it.
We shall have a meeting on Tuesday as planned -- Tuesday 19th July at 1pm in Social Sciences South G210. As always, meet us outside if the room is busy, please don't run away!

Shameless plug for Google's new satellite imagery: if you don't know where our meeting is, it's in the centre of this link:
http://maps.google.com/maps?ll=-31.980557,115.819159&spn=0.005371,0.006747&t=k&hl=en

We hope to be setting ourselves up for a great semester, following from our proposed cooperation with Subiaco Rotaract on a couple of projects.

Don't forget that our new website is now up and running and members can contribute to it -- not just me! If you didn't get the instructions or want any help let me know.

Our new website is at:
http://www.rotaract.guild.uwa.edu.au/blog/

Ania, who has now travelled to Queensland, was the first non-me to post to the website, check out her message here:
http://www.rotaract.guild.uwa.edu.au/blog/2005/07/hi-everyone.html

From now on this bulletin will also appear on the website, along with minutes and anything YOU want to post.

Here's to a good semester, and see you Tuesday.

Welcome to our new, improved website

Hi all, it's Joshua your faithful Membership/Internet officer here, welcoming you to our new, improved website!

This is what people call a blog -- basically an online diary that you can attach comments, notes and photos to without having to know anything about web sites. If you can use your webmail, you can update this site (hopefully taking some of the pressure off me!).

Plus blogs just look better.

Current members, I will e-mail instructions as to how you can get involved with this site (sorry the bulletins are a month behind!).

New members and friends of Rotaract Club of UWA, tell us what you think! Leave a comment (you can be anonymous) by clicking the Comment link below. Otherwise you can also e-mail us at our usual address.
